Country information

Bhutan, nestled in the eastern Himalayas, is a small, landlocked kingdom it emphasizes Gross National Happiness over economic growth. Bhutan limits tourism to preserve its culture and environment.

Discover Bhutan: Country Info, Culture, Majestic Mountains, and Unique Regions

Welcome to the land of the thunder dragon and "gross national happiness". Bhutan, unique and barely known on the tourist map, offers unspoiled nature and cultural treasures. On your trip through Bhutan, experience a "living culture" that the Buddhist kingdom has preserved through its remote location. The mountains are unclimbed and the trekking tours in Bhutan are lonely and original. In recent years, sustainable high-end tourism has developed in Bhutan, which retains a special character due to low visitor numbers. In Bhutan, culture, nature, tourism and the population merge into a pleasant unit.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Bhutan?

The best time to visit Bhutan is during the spring and autumn seasons (March to May and late September to December), when the weather is mild and visibility is clear. Winter months may be cool, especially in higher altitudes, and the monsoon season (June to August) may experience increased rainfall

Are altitude sicknesses a problem while trekking in Bhutan?

Yes, altitude sickness can be a problem, especially on trekking routes reaching altitudes over 5000m. It is recommended to familiarize yourself with symptoms and prevention of altitude sickness before the trip and to plan for adequate acclimatization time. We follow the motto "go high and sleep down," always spending 2 nights in the Paro Valley and 2 nights in the Haa Valley before starting the trek, or we conduct the treks at the end of a tour when you are well acclimatized.

What are the accommodations like during a trek in Bhutan?

Most travelers stay in tents set up by the accompanying team during trekking routes in Bhutan. We provide camping equipment as a tour operator. In some cases, there are also simple lodges or guesthouses along the route.

What is the official currency in Bhutan?

The official currency in Bhutan is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN). However, US dollars and EUR € are also widely accepted, especially in tourist areas

How can I plan and book my Bhutan trip?

You can book your Bhutan trip through us - a registered tour operator. Travelers must arrange a prepaid trip with a licensed tour operator who handles the necessary formalities for the visa and SDF charges. We take care of all formalities.

What are the "SDF state charges" and how are they calculated?

SDF stands for "Sustainable Development Fee" and is a mandatory fee levied on foreign tourists in Bhutan. This fee contributes to financing education, health, and infrastructure projects in the country. The SDF fee is currently USD 100 per person per night. This fee is included in our tour price, and as a tour operator, we remit it to the government before the trip to Bhutan.

Are tips customary in Bhutan?

Tips are not mandatory in Bhutan, but they are appreciated in the tourism industry as a sign of appreciation for good service. It is common to tip guides, drivers, trekking teams, and hotel staff. However, the amount of the tip is subjective and depends on satisfaction with the service.

How do I get to Bhutan?

The usual way to get to Bhutan is by plane. Bhutan has an international airport, Paro International Airport. Selected airlines such as Druk Air (Royal Bhutan Airlines) or Bhutan Airlines offer direct flights to Paro from various cities such as Delhi (India), Kathmandu (Nepal), Mumbai (India), and Bangkok (Thailand). Alternatively, travelers can enter via Kolkata, Bagdogra, or Guwahati by road into western or eastern Bhutan or take flights from there to Paro. It is important to note that travel to Bhutan is only possible through registered tour operators, who must arrange all necessary visa and travel arrangements.
