Country information
Population
In the small country of the Dragon at the foot of the Himalayas, approximately 750,000 people live (as of 2016).
The mountainous landscape of the state has led people to settle along the valleys. The fact that the residents call themselves Drukpa is due to the country's own designation for Bhutan, "Druk yul" - Land of the Dragon.
With a life expectancy of just under 65 years, the group of children and adolescents constitutes the largest part of the population. The head of the residents is King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Overall, the Himalayan state has a very low population density.
Bhutan: A population with great ethnic diversity
The inhabitants of Bhutan consist of three major ethnic groups: the Sharchops, the Ngalops, and the Lhotshampas. Especially the western part of the country is more densely populated. Here and in central Bhutan live the ruling class, the Ngalops. They migrated from Tibet in the Middle Ages and brought Buddhism with them. The earliest settlers, who predominantly live in the east today, belong to the Sharchop group.
The Lhotshampas, who migrated from Nepal, inhabit the lowlands in the south and mainly live off agriculture. The descendants of Hindus who migrated in the 19th century still live in this part of Bhutan. When a census in 1980 revealed that the Nepali minority constituted almost 50 percent of the population, the Hindu Nepalis had to endure severe discrimination. The following years were also not easy due to Bhutan's policies: Many people from this minority fled to India and Nepal.
Bhutan - a country with many languages
The great ethnic diversity is also reflected in the various languages and dialects spoken by the inhabitants. In addition to the official languages Dzongkha and English, there are over 18 other languages spoken in the country. Those who want to experience the history and culture of this unique population up close will appreciate the direct contact with the people on a trip to Bhutan.
We are happy to plan your trip to Bhutan to get to know the population, the country, and the various facets of the Dragon Kingdom and give you an insight into the lives of the people between China and India.
