Kitchen & cuisine
Bhutanese cuisine - chili must not be missing.
For all lovers of spicy flavors, Bhutanese cuisine is just right. Often vegetarian and combined with cheese, the food is very digestible. White and red nutty rice is the staple food of the country.
Bhutanese people also enjoy serving various vegetables, as well as fried beef, yak, or pork. Throughout the country, you can also find chicken meat.
Spicy chilis with rice
Since the majority of people in Bhutan adhere to the Buddhist faith, vegetarian dishes are often on the menu. The locals enjoy spicy food and often reach for chili peppers. Whether green or red: Sometimes the chili is even eaten raw. Because in Bhutan, chili is not just a spice, but a vegetable that frequently lands on the plate. Also popular are the small dumplings called Momos, filled with cheese or minced meat.
One of the traditional dishes and staples of Bhutanese cuisine is Ema Datshi. Those who dare to try this national dish will be served chili with yak cheese sauce and rice. For those who find this too spicy, there are many variations of this dish, such as potatoes and cheese or mushrooms with cheese.
You also have the choice between the typical beverages of the country: salted butter tea, black tea with milk/cinnamon/sugar, Ara (rice schnapps), or Chang (beer). Locally produced whiskey and rum are also of excellent quality. On a Bhutan trekking tour, boiled water and tea are the beverages of choice.
European bhutan cuisine in hotels
The residents of Bhutan are very attentive to the culinary needs of their visitors. While breakfast, lunch, and dinner may be very similar for a local, tourists can expect different meals in hotels that are more European. For breakfast, you'll receive typical Bhutanese tea, coffee, toast, jam, and optionally, cereal or eggs. However, you can also enjoy authentic local food, which can be coordinated with your guide.
If you prefer dining in restaurants, you'll often find dishes from India and China. The delicious dishes in Bhutan are refreshed in the summer with mushrooms and ferns from the forest. Join us on a journey through Bhutan and experience the country from its authentic side. On all our tours, sufficient and varied meals are, of course, provided.
