New update from August 28, 2023
We are pleased to announce the revised New SDF (Sustainable Development Fee) scheme introduced by the government to strengthen the tourism sector. This comes into force from September 1st, 2023 and is valid until August 31st, 2027.
In autumn 2022, the tourism tax was increased from USD 65 to USD 200 per person per day, but in autumn 2023 it was reduced again to USD 100. This means that for a 14-day stay in Bhutan you pay USD 1400 (14 x USD 100) to the government. This amount only covers the permit to stay in the country - the actual travel costs are added on top. While this system makes travel to Bhutan expensive, it prevents mass tourism and preserves the unique local culture, nature and way of life of the people.
The incentives are:
- The effective discounted SDF fee is USD 100 per person per night for paying tourists in US dollars.
- Additional 50% discount on SDF fee for children aged 06-12 visiting as paying children tourists.
- Waiver of SDF fees for 24 hours in border towns will continue.
- The incentives are effective from September 1, 2023 and will remain in effect for 04 years until August 31, 2027.
Bhutan, known as one of the most exclusive travel destinations in the world, impresses with authenticity, remoteness and a well-protected cultural heritage as well as an intact natural environment. In this context, the tourism sector has developed into a dynamic economic sector with enormous growth and development potential.
The Royal Government of Bhutan has a clear vision: "To promote Bhutan as an exclusive tourist destination based on the values of Gross National Happiness (GNH)." This vision is reflected in the policy of "high value, low volume" tourism, which aims to give Bhutan an exclusive and profitable image.
Bhutan's tourism industry is based on the principle of sustainability. This means that tourism must be environmentally and ecologically friendly, socially and culturally acceptable and economically viable. The Royal Government recognizes the global impact of tourism as a means of socio-economic development, especially for a developing country like Bhutan. She sees tourism as a way to promote deeper understanding between people, based on appreciation and respect for different cultures and ways of life.
To achieve these goals, the Royal Government is taking a cautious approach to the growth and development of the tourism industry. Bhutan's indigenous industry and the country's unique advantages are compelling reasons to promote Bhutan as a quality tourist destination. This is done in line with the principles of Gross National Happiness to ensure a sustainable and authentic travel experience.
All offers can be personalized, experience Bhutan as it would otherwise never be possible!
