Bhutan Hotels, Lodges & Camp Recommendations

Recommendations and information about our selected accommodations for you!

We would like to kindly point out how important it is to choose the right accommodation for your Bhutan trip. The room categories and the planned travel route are particularly important here. The right mix is crucial for a successful experience.

We recommend you stay at least 2-3 nights in one place. This makes the accommodation worthwhile and you also have the opportunity to get to know the surroundings in peace and experience them more intensively.

As a rule, we choose carefully selected, small and fine, family-run lodges and mid-range accommodations. These have the advantage that there are no large groups present as the accommodations only have a few rooms. This ensures a pleasant atmosphere and a more individual and often better food offering.

We can also recommend accommodation in the 4-5 star range for an additional charge if you are interested

Bhutan Hotels, Accommodation and Lodges: Our Recommendations

Choosing the right accommodation is crucial for a successful trip to Bhutan. As the owner of the personally run tour operator berghorizonte, I, Christian Schubert, travel to Bhutan every year to carefully examine and personally evaluate the hotels, lodges, homestays and accommodations.

At our partner hotels in Bhutan, we attach great importance to a pleasant atmosphere, cleanliness, excellent food, friendly staff and a beautiful location. Most hotels and resorts correspond to around the 3-star standard, but this is only of limited significance.

There are few accommodation options in regions such as Trashi Yangtse and Samdrup Jongkhar. Here we strive to find the best possible option for you.

Bhutan now also offers several 5-star luxury hotels, including the Aman Resorts, the Taj Hotel in Thimphu, the Uma Hotels in Paro and Punakha, Le Meridien in Thimphu and Paro and the Zhiwaling in Paro. If you prefer luxurious accommodation, we can arrange this at specific locations. A slightly cheaper but still nice option is the Hotel Naksel in Paro.

Our “homestays” offer a special experience. You spend the night in traditional farmhouses, get to know the family that lives there and share their simple life.

Travel and accommodation policy in Bhutan

Traveling in Bhutan requires some tolerance and flexibility, especially in terms of comfort and service. Nevertheless, everyone always tries to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

Our accommodations: homestays, lodges and guesthouses

We leave nothing to chance and can book any accommodation from a simple homestay to a 5-star deluxe hotel. Our recommendations are based on the personal experiences of the berghorizonte team and feedback from our guests. All hotels, lodges and homestays we offer comply with the requirements of the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB). However, in some regions there are only simple hotels that do not meet European standards.

You will receive a detailed hotel list before your booking/travel confirmation.

Please understand that there may be bottlenecks in the high season (March/April and October/November). The earlier you book, the better we can secure the accommodation you want. We recommend booking 6-14 months in advance.

Transparency when choosing a hotel in Bhutan

We would like to leave the decision up to you and sort the accommodations into three categories: mid-range, comfort and deluxe. This means you can choose the right accommodation according to your comfort requirements independently of us.

3-star mid-range hotels

Our mid-range accommodation meets the basic requirements of functionality and cleanliness and can be booked at no extra charge. We carefully select small, typical and well-run hotels, homestays and farm lodges.

4-star comfort class hotels

This category includes traditional boutique hotels and fine lodges in the typical local style. It's worth staying here for 2-3 nights to enjoy a relaxing holiday and explore the surrounding area. A special recommendation is the Naksel Boutique Hotel with a fantastic mountain view of the Chomolhari and the Tiger's Nest Monastery.

5-star deluxe and luxury hotels

Our high-end retreat lodges offer royal ambience and great nature. Whether AMANKORA, the new Six Senses Lodges or the Uma Paro/Punakha by COMO Hotels – they leave nothing to be desired and offer a perfect experience in Bhutan.

Through this optimized presentation of accommodation in Bhutan, we offer you a transparent and comprehensive overview so that your trip is unforgettable.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Bhutan?

Yes, you need a visa for Bhutan. It is issued by the Tourism Authority of Bhutan. As an official tour operator, we take care of this and will send you the Bhutan visa via email approximately 2 weeks before the start of your trip.

When is the best time to visit Bhutan?

The best time to visit Bhutan is during the spring and autumn seasons (March to May and late September to December), when the weather is mild and visibility is clear. Winter months may be cool, especially in higher altitudes, and the monsoon season (June to August) may experience increased rainfall

Do I need special insurance for trekking in Bhutan?

Yes, it is strongly recommended to have travel insurance that covers trekking activities, as hiking or trekking in remote areas and at high altitudes can pose risks.

What are the accommodations like during a trek in Bhutan?

Most travelers stay in tents set up by the accompanying team during trekking routes in Bhutan. We provide camping equipment as a tour operator. In some cases, there are also simple lodges or guesthouses along the route.

How can I plan and book my Bhutan trip?

You can book your Bhutan trip through us - a registered tour operator. Travelers must arrange a prepaid trip with a licensed tour operator who handles the necessary formalities for the visa and SDF charges. We take care of all formalities.

What are the "SDF state charges" and how are they calculated?

SDF stands for "Sustainable Development Fee" and is a mandatory fee levied on foreign tourists in Bhutan. This fee contributes to financing education, health, and infrastructure projects in the country. The SDF fee is currently USD 100 per person per night. This fee is included in our tour price, and as a tour operator, we remit it to the government before the trip to Bhutan.

How do I get to Bhutan?

The usual way to get to Bhutan is by plane. Bhutan has an international airport, Paro International Airport. Selected airlines such as Druk Air (Royal Bhutan Airlines) or Bhutan Airlines offer direct flights to Paro from various cities such as Delhi (India), Kathmandu (Nepal), Mumbai (India), and Bangkok (Thailand). Alternatively, travelers can enter via Kolkata, Bagdogra, or Guwahati by road into western or eastern Bhutan or take flights from there to Paro. It is important to note that travel to Bhutan is only possible through registered tour operators, who must arrange all necessary visa and travel arrangements.
